Gozo’s hilly ups and downs make it challenging yet pleasant for cyclists. The countryside offers opportunities for exploration and journeys can be broken up with stops at the delightful villages along the way. Hilltops offer unobstructed views of the whole island.

First time riders will enjoy pony trekking as part of a secure group, while seasoned riders can trot through the countryside unaided. Several experienced riding schools are open in Gozo operating in line with EU regulations. Your concierge can help you to set up a ride to suit you.

Boat lovers will adore Gozo and there are several options. Consider heading down to Dwejra (the inland sea) for a quick trip to the caves in a little fishing boat. Alternatively, speedboats, dinghies and yachts are available for hire with or without a crew on board. Again, your hotel concierge can assist with all on island activities.

    Theatre and Opera
Gozo has two theatres, the Aurora Opera House and the Astra Theatre. Both have seen a rise in popularity in recent years, especially thanks to the improvement of their respective calendars and have become synonymous with local and foreign opera names. A medley of local and international drama, music and dance troupes also regularly perform on the Island.

    Village Feasts
Dominating the summer calendar, traditional village feasts date back to the 16th Century and are still going strong all over Malta and Gozo today. The festa is the main social event in the village year and is the outcome of months of hard work by willing volunteers. Celebrations begin with three days of prayer leading up to the feast day. The highlight of each feast is a huge firework display that takes place at around midnight on the Saturday night amid much revelry, food and fun.

    Notte Gozitana
Now a regular part of Gozo’s calendar, Notte Gozitana (Gozitan Night) is an exciting celebration of Gozo and its people. The annual programme boasts an eclectic mix of different art forms ensuring it will appeal to culture lovers of all ages.

    History of Gozo

Gozo’s eclectic past dates back to 5000BC making it the perfect destination for those on a mission to discover the history of the Mediterranean. The Temple Period (4100 – 2500BC) provided the island with what are today the oldest freestanding standing temples in the world. The Ggantija Temples, today a UNESCO site, are situated in the sleepy village of Xaghra, a breathtaking place of mystery and intrigue and well-worth a visit.

Over the years Gozo’s control has been in the hands of many from the Phoenicians, the Romans and the Arabs to, more recently, the Knights of St John, the French and the British. Each left their mark providing today’s travelers which an exciting path to explore.

Another spot worth a visit is the Citadella, situated high on Victoria’s hill. This small, fortified town was built by the Knights during their stay on the islands and today houses the island’s Cathedral, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum and the Old Prisons. It also offers panoramic views of the whole island and a climb to the top is well worth the effort.
